Homeowners in the UK are to be paid for producing their own own energy, the government announced yesterday.
Labour plans to offer UK homeowners “cash incentives” for electricity generated through rooftop windmills, solar panels and wood burning stoves.
The additional energy not used by the homeowners could then be sold back to the National Grid.
The scheme was unveiled by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and aims to increase the country's use of energy from green sources from around 2% to 15% by 2020.
The cash incentives are hoped to encourage UK homeowners to invest in green technology.
According to Thisismoney:
“A typical' 2.5 kilowatt solar installation would generate payments of £900 and reduce electricity bills by £140 a year. This would eventually offset the installation cost of £12,000.”
An array of tariffs will be offered to UK homeowners in April, said Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband.
ThisisMoney also reported that tariffs would be guaranteed for between 10 and 25 years, depending on the type of equipment and will rise inline with inflation.
The cash incentives will be distributed by power suppliers and offset against homeowners energy bills.
Mr Miliband told ThisisMoney: “The guarantee of getting an income on top of savings on energy bills will be an incentive to householders and communities wanting to make the move to low carbon living.”
